For more than 25 years, my main passion has been creating one-of-a-kind art in fused dichroic glass.
Dichroic glass is made by fusing several one atom thick layers of purified “rare earth” coatings on to the surface of the glass with an electron beam in a vacuum chamber.
Dichroic coatings are used on the optics of high end binoculars, telescopes, microscopes, cameras, and sun glasses for increased optical clarity.
They are also expressly produced for artists in dazzling colors and designs.
Dichroic coatings refract light in the same way a feather does and produce a visual spectrum of shifting color as the angle and lighting shift.
As an artist I strive to express myself by creating colorful and luminous works of art in the challenging and difficult medium of kiln fired glass.
Each dichroic creation is cut, shaped, layered and fired multiple times to produce the 3 dimensional, dynamic multi color effects that can be seen in McCray Studios jewelry.
I truly enjoy working with glass and I still get excited every time I open my kiln.
I also hand-craft Sterling silver to complement my glass creations.
Living on the Mendocino Coast of California, I interpret coastal, nature, floral, and marine themes in my work.
I endeavor to create tiny, gallery-quality, wearable works of art.
I truly hope everyone purchasing my jewelry enjoys wearing them as much I love making them.
